Important Parent survey!

Please choose 1 option for Christmas Holidays next year. The calendar is a bit of a problem for 2016! We either go to school right until the day before Christmas Eve...or have an early start to Christmas. Tell the Board your choice!

Miss. Sturgeon away

Miss Sturgeon will be away Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon for a series of workshops!

Please note, if there are any lack of answers to questions in agendas, etc. it is because Miss. Sturgeon did not see them and is away. Feel free to email if it is very important. Homework will be coming home as usual, but less as it is a four day week. Prodigy has new times table questions, so please log in from home.

Keep practicing reading RAZ KIDS, as Miss Sturgeon can see how well students are working on quiz questions and how many minutes are being spent reading.

News

Progress Reports came home tonight. Sign up for interviews following the steps provided. It may be tricky to book interviews for afternoon (Math and Language) classes, as instructions say to book for morning teachers. Don't worry...we will meet you, one way or another!

Please feel free to attend our Remembrance Day Ceremony! It is open to all parents. Our morning class will be overseeing everything that day.

Prodigy now has assignments ready for homework. We have reviewed Place Value and Number Basics enough since the transition of all the students, and are finally ready to move on to a more 'formal' unit of Patterning! There will be a formal test and study guide for this unit, and all upcoming units.

Homework

If the homework math is too tricky this week, leave it incomplete and we will finish it next week. Our class did not get to the section in patterning that we aimed for this week. Feel free to try it out anyway, if you wish! (No points docked for those who don't!)

Happy Back To the Future Day!

If you are a fan of the popular Back to the Future movies, today is the day that Marty McFly came to the future! Interestingly enough, that movie predicted a lot of things that actually are currently existing! CBC has a cover story about it today. Here is a fun list of what ended up existing (or NOT) on Wednesday, October 21 2015:

Prodigy

Prodigy letters have been sent home. Check that your username and password works/still works! Assignments have been entered. There are approximately 12 questions hiding in Prodigy to find and answer. They are rounding, place value based. They will be part of next week's homework and due by next Friday. I check Thursday nights to see which students have not completed the online assignment and for who I have no digital report on. Prodigy sends me each child's score and ranking. Some students with no online access can work in class.

Have fun (and learn)!

Prodigy Ready for our new class!

Our new math class should be up and running for Prodigy Math Gaming. This is a wonderful international site to improve math skills through questions that are directly aligned to the Ontario Math Curriculum. A new parent note will be coming home this week for your child's free account login details. Parents are encouraged to follow the steps to LINK IN and see their child's progress. Students that were in my previous math class should be keeping the same username and password. Students who left my class still have access to their account.

Have fun!

Prodigy

Hello everyone! For students in my previous math class, as well as those who remained, you will have to be patient while trying Prodigy. Since we have to create a new math class, old accounts may have to be wiped out, and passwords re-created. There are also no assigned pages right now. Feel free to keep using it for fun until further notice. A letter will come home to all my math students about any changes. Thanks!

Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes!

Well, the big move has happened! We have a different class arrangement beginning tomorrow, and I am sad to see many faces leave my room. We are also welcoming many new faces. To the new families; welcome!

NEW? My beginning of the year question sheet about your child will be coming home right away tomorrow, as will my September Newsletter, so you have the same information as the other parents had.

Your child will be given a Prodigy math account shortly, for homework and in-class fun.

We use Class Dojo to track Learning skills. These accounts will be sent home soon as well.

Please check this blog often for information about our class!

Our class is now a Grade 4/5 in the morning with 25 students having French, science/art/gym, and then a straight Grade 4 of 28 students studying Math and Language/Religion.

Yikes! Homework

Homework has officially begun!

Grade 4 students-Chose a duotang colour they liked, and loaded a practice in place value page inside. Some students have 2 sheets if they didn't finish a task from last week's review of expanded form. Students have until Friday to work on the assignment.

Grade 5 students- They received a Math Quest textbook. It can stay at home all year until June. Keep it in a safe place. All work is to be answered in the pink toned notebook provided. We are practicing notebooks skills, so the page number and assignment should be labelled well.
Assignment- Read page 4. Do questions 1-29 (all page 4 and page 5). Return pink book only on Friday!

WELCOME!

Welcome to a new school year in Miss.Sturgeon's class. This blog will be used to inform about things happening in our room, as well as provide homework links and assignments. As stated in the information that came home today, we are trying to go paperless, and need to find out the internet access for those of you at home. Then we can proceed with digital homework and photocopies for students who cannot access websites at home. This may take a bit of time, so we may need to begin the year with a folder of worksheets then transition to the internet as we get a digital program off the ground!

We have 35 students in our class this year, which is very large.

Homework assignments will be written in agendas on Mondays, and usually due by Friday.

There is no regular homework this week.

A TIME CAPSULE project will be coming home shortly and due by the end of September. Watch for the agenda info!

Parent Info night will be held next week Tuesday Sept. 16th from 7pm until 8pm.

Summer is here!

Have a wonderful vacation everyone! For those who want to keep sharp over the summer, use any of the links on this website to practice your times tables or division skills. There are new grammar games added to Emillia's Summer Corner, a box of links next to this entry. We have named it Emillia's Corner as she was the first to request summer "stay sharp" work. Way to go Emillia!!

Feed our TURTLES!

Stellar Graphing Work

Our class has been doing an excellent job with Graphing this term. We have explored many different types, and the most difficult to make was a project we did collecting Heart Rates of everyone in our class. We checked everyone's resting pulse and then our exercise pulse, and created a tricky Interval Double Bar Graph. Then we had to organize all our data and create a 2D graph.

After that, we used a software program (Create A Graph) online and made professional 3D graphs. They were amazing.

**We also demonstrated this for a few teachers from China. The Chinese Delegates viewed our graphing projects and watched students enter their data into the program. They were very excited to see our results.

Several of our graphs are posted below!

Help for that Science Poster!

E-Learning Video about Energy

Homework

This month, students have a research POSTER PROJECT to create at home. They have until the end of the month to complete the project and bring them in to share with the class.

Grade 4 students will be looking at renewable energy, but explore if there are any cons (drawback/problems) with using renewable of energy. How does it affect our animal habitats and wildlife?

Grade 5's will be choosing a renewable energy and exploring all about it: the good (pros), why it is better than non-renewable, how much it costs etc.

Weekend Homework Special Tasks

Due to the amount students struggle every year with division, decimals and fractions, we are starting weekend extra homework practice worksheets. They will come home Friday and will be due Monday morning. We will correct them as a class that morning and review mistakes and misconceptions.

Please take time to help your child, especially if their times tables are not memorized by now. Division is tricky when times tables are not known. Fractions will be difficult as well, as times tables are used to create equal fractions or reduce them.

Monday, March 2, 2015

Homework

Homework this week will continue to focus on our quest to have all students completing 50 times tables within a three minute time slot. We do daily speed tests to increase accuracy and timing. This week's focus is on the 7 times table. The homework also includes the drill for division speed, using the same seven fact family.
Grade 5 also has textbook work practicing multiplication; page 56 and 57 # 1 to 10 and # 36-38.

We are beginning to focus on two and three digit by one digit multiplying. Then moving towards double digit by double digit and finally long division.

Long division is always a challenge for students, and knowing times tables will help greatly.

Homework and Times Tables!

Homework this week is a focus on the 6 times table, especially for Grade 4. Times table memorizing come with repetition at home, and should be mastered by Grade 5.

As we creep closer to the BIG units: Fractions, Division and Decimals, marks often drop because of inability to see times table patterns.

Grade 5 has 6 times table as review (they should be memorized by now!) and extra textbook work.

Our class goal is to have everyone able to complete 50 times table questions in under 3 minutes.
We do speed and accuracy tests 3 to 4 times a week on our focus table (last week 4's, this week 6's).

Miss.Sturgeon has the flu! Homework news too.

Miss. Sturgeon has the flu. Not a head cold, but influenza. Thank goodness she got her flu shot, so the duration should be only a few days instead one to two weeks! She is starting to feel a tiny bit better already and her fever is coming down. It's just that killer cough! Be sure to do extra hand washing, as it is obviously in our school now!

Homework will simply be a spelling sheet to practice, coming home Tuesday evening. The supply teacher should be sending it out. Practice on Mathletics and Prodigy to get those times tables speeds up!

Practice Prodigy math games and Mathletics as much as possible! Collect and train those PRODIGY PETS!

This week's Homework math for Grade 5 is textbook decimeter practice pages 242 and 243 (all).
Grade 4 is practicing times tables and measuring.

No spelling this week.

Don't forget it is our SKATE TIME again...coming up Friday at 10am. We need as many volunteers as possible to tie skates and come skate with us.

Math Tests!

Yippee! Any students who were away sick have now completed our Patterning Math Test...which means the test can now come home for parents to sign.

We still have about 8 students who have lost/not returned the Tests and Quiz duotang from the last time it was sent home. Please look around the house and return it. It is a logbook of your child's main tests, and we are not able to fill them up when they are at home.

Please return the test, signed, by Monday. Thanks!

This week- Skating, Mathletics and Homework OH MY!

This week we have SKATING again on Tuesday morning. Several teachers, including Miss. Sturgeon, are at an all day math workshop, and therefore a supply teacher will be skating with the students. Any parents that can volunteer, please do, as it will help out our guest teacher immensely!

Wednesday is a special treat for Grade 3-6. In our gym we are hosting a MATHLETES day. Students will be doing an entire day of fun math games and challenges...and it also counts for class! Don't miss it!! Our school was lucky to have these Mathlete guests come to our school!

Math tests will be coming home soon. Several students were away sick and were not able to finish their tests. As a result, they cannot come home on Monday as planned, but as soon as the final few students, they will come home. Watch the agenda for the day. Student (so far!) did very well on our big unit Patterning test.

HOMEWORK this week: Try to get more of those Matheltics Awards! Go on www.mathletics.ca every night for homework number practice and fun learning challenges.

In addition to regular Matheletics work, students also should complete:
Grade 4- Measurement practice worksheet cm and mm
Grade 5- Textbook homework page 240 Read and Estimate bug lengths.Page 241 # 1-11. (cm and mm)

Important News: SKATING AND MATHLETICS programs

Hello Parents!
We have some pretty cool new things to start in January. The first is a favourite: our gym program: skating trips. Yes, it counts as part of physical education...not just a fun trip.

Please see the dates and times sent home. The first skate time is next week. There are TWO forms to complete. They are as follows; the signature 'permission' that you are aware they are skating, and the second is information/medical/contacts for emergency. Please complete both. The latter is stapled in the agenda so it won't get lost.

We need to know ahead of time if your child does not have skates or a helmet (bike helmet is fine). This way, we can try to find extras or share.

We are beginning AN AMAZING PROGRAM that we are super excited about. Our school board has paired up with MATHLETICS..and wonderful and fun math site. Some homework will be assigned on Mathletics. Students have their private logins already. We will do some in class, and some at home. If you do not have internet access at home, please let me know so your child can do some extra work in class.
