The topics covered will be from the Patterning and Algebra Math Strand: solving pre-algebra style equations, representing equality, problems solving with variables, in and out pattern boxes and solving patterns with a table of values. The test will be Tuesday.

Advent Begins

Advent has begun! Our class will be participating in weekly Advent Liturgies. If your child has been selected (via random draw from the many volunteers) for a reading, watch for the piece of paper to practice to come home Tuesday evening in the agenda.

Coding Fun

Several parents have shown interest in coding with their children. Here is a site I love:

https://hourofcode.com/us/learn

Click on a theme you enjoy (Star Wars, Minecraft).

Choose BLOCKS instead of JavaScript for your choice if you have not done a lot of coding before.

My favourite is this Star Wars one:

Math Test Thursday

Our math test is on THURSDAY. Please refer to the study guide that should have come home last week. I noticed many students carrying it back and forth and working on answers or asking me questions over the last few days. This is wonderful.

Just make sure (parents) you have seen it so you know what your child will be tested on!

Our next math unit is Algebra. Here is a direct copy from the curriculum on the 3 main expectations we will be delving into:

In reading we will be placing focus on the goals below, especially inferring (1.5). Here are the curriculum expectations:

BOOK FAIR TOMORROW

Don't forget, tomorrow is our Book Fair purchase day! As a class, we will go to the library at 9:50am to buy books that we would love to read. If you wish your child to purchase a book, send in cash in a baggie or envelope for tomorrow. Student away at cross country can buy a book with me on Thursday, if they want to.

Free Pizza Thank You!

Our class donated the most (for the Grade 4-6 category) for our Terry Fox Run Cancer Research fundraiser. Well over 220 dollars!

As a result, we will be receiving a free PIZZA LUNCH!!

Good Job Grade 5!!!

The pizza lunch date will be posted as soon as we are informed about it from the office.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL WHO DONATED and those eager students who gathered pledges or worked on cleaning their room, or washing dishes after dinner to earn some money.

Prodigy Math Homework

If you have time, or on weekends, please try to do some of our weekly questions in Prodigy. So far, half of our class has done so. Try your login at home. If you lost the page or it doesn't work, send a note in the agenda and I will re-issue the code page.

There are 30 questions entered into Prodigy game. They correspond with types of math we are discussing and working on in class. Currently, it is place value practice and decomposing numbers.

The practice is excellent for students to sharpen skills and the teacher feedback is wonderful, suggesting areas of need for you child and showing gaps in their learning that we can improve on.

Math Test Study Guide

We will be filling in our math test study guide this week, reviewing some of the big ideas we covered in math. It should be in your child's bag on Friday. The test will be next Thursday.

If you have not received your child's Class Dojo login information or Prodigy login information (both pages were sent last week), please write a note in the agenda.

Picture/Photo Day this Friday

Our school photo day is this Friday, October 12th. So get that hair combed and favourite outfit on. Plus, don't forget to smile. Let's not have photos that look like these classics:

Fall News

Our class is finishing our place value unit in math, so watch for a short test study guide to come home towards the end of the week.

Prodigy account logins will be sent this week, as well as Class Dojo login information.   **Watch for these pages in the agenda.

Our next math unit will be Patterning and Algebra, in conjunction with ongoing practice of mental math; addition and subtraction of numbers up to 100,000.

Our focus in language will be narrative writing, variety of sentence structure (to avoid the use of  repetition such as and then, and then, and then....) as well as adjective use to describe.

Science will continue to focus on different human body systems. We are almost finished the Digestive System, and move on towards the parts of the cell and circulatory system.

Our class welcome Miss. Martin, our student teacher who will observe our class every Wednesday.

*****Our Terry Fox run was a success! Our class raised $220.00 (and that is not yet counting the online payments) for cancer research!*****

Eggciting Science/Language/Math

Image result for mars imageWOW!! Our class is imagining (but with real chickens) that we are the first scientists on Mars. We have started a colony and are beginning to terraform the planet. The first thing we need to do to be sustainable is to grow organisms, especially ones that are sources of food. Plants, cows, chickens... all will be needed on Mars. We are trying to use an incubator to hatch the first ever space chickens! First we need to be completely familiar with the structure of an egg and know the development of the embryo inside it. As scientists, we will monitor the growth of the embryo using a light to shine through the egg to check on the blood vessels within. We will be taking observational notes, creating Google slideshows about chicken development, and how incubators work.

Ask us about what happens weekly! Our scientists hope to know as much as we can by the end of this week!

We will post weekly on this blog (with pictures) about the development of our embryos. Keep your fingers crossed that we can hatch our chickens!! Then we can (start to imagine) surviving in space!!

Trying to hatch and study quails in space:
