End of the year

As the end of the year comes to a close, I would like to say how pleased I was to have taught your children this year. It was a fun and busy year! I wish you all a fabulous summer vacation, wherever it may take you.

If any parents wish to have a worksheet/book assembled for extra practice over the summer, please write a note. I am already making a few for other parents. It is a great way to stay on top of the math, as I always see regression in September, especially with times tables. You can also encouraged visiting the site on this blog for practice games. Thanks!

We are registered and ready to go! We simply will need to login to http://links.discoveryeducation.com/JapanWebinar

Students will have the chance to submit questions to ask live!

Science Projects: Grade 5

The students will be bringing home their science project on Tuesday May 17th. It is a large project and requires the help of the internet, and some parental guidance. If students are having any technical problems, such as printers or are not able to access the internet (and cannot find anything in the Kanata Library) they are to contact Miss. Sturgeon right away and use the school computers at recess times. Web links will be provided here to help, so check for frequent additions.

Please refer to the handout sent home, as it includes all the instructions, the expectations, and even a level 4 sample report as a guide for you child.

Both the short report (1 page single spaced) and the poster (each for a different resource) will be due Monday May 30th.

As a result, there will be less weekly homework for Grade 5s in order to allow time to work on this nightly. It should not be a lot of work if done for about a half hour or so nightly. It should never be left until the last week or last few days. It will count as part of their science mark, and homework learning skills.

EDUCATION WEEK

Education week is upon us. It will be a busy week, so there is less assigned homework; only a few sheets of math graphing review. Our Open House is Friday morning at 8:15am and our school Mass is tomorrow at 10:45am. The Dance club will be away performing their talents on Thursday and will show their moves on Friday morning.

Please keep checking the agenda nightly and signing. I see many unsigned or un-initialled days and worry parents do not know what is happening at school.

We said farewell to our Student Teacher today with a party and a presentation of a beautiful book the students made for her.

Our school was surprised this morning by an incredible rock performance to kick off Education Week. They performed songs about being different and its chic to be a geek.

The ECOTEAM is still busy taking care of recycling and Green Bins. We are doing very well with our collecting. Thanks to all the students who participate!

Miscellaneous News

Our student teacher has been hard at work planning lessons for the students. She is teaching many lessons in math, language, science and computers. In math, we are saying goodbye to fractions and beginning graphing- looking at bar graphs, pie graphs, pictographs, surveys and broken line graphs.

We have a Fraction math test on Monday. Hopefully all students used their study guide AND self test AND self test answer sheet (sent home Friday) to help study throughout the week and on the weekend.

In language, students have been creating brochures and studying advertising through brochures/pamphlets, which also links to media literacy curriculum.

In science, the grade 5's are exploring Conservation of Energy, which fits in nicely with our Ecoschools Program. Our class is still busy collecting all the school's Green Bins throughout the week and are sorting recycling in addition to checking that teacher's have lights out and computers off at lunch.

CANS!!!

As you may know, our class was in charge of collecting the cans for Spirit Week. We did our final totals today and counted a grand total of 532 cans!!!! That was over 2 days and was not even an 'official' Canned Food Drive. We are all extremely impressed by the enthusiasm, kindness and generosity the students and families have shown. That was a perfect end to Ottawa Kindness Week.

Skating tomorrow

It is once again our turn to skate! We are skating in the afternoon tomorrow at the arena. Bring your helmets!

Buses Cancelled

Please note, due to freezing rain, the buses are canceled.

Update

It's been a little while since our last update. Valentines Day was a success and lots of fun, thanks to all parents who sent in fabulous treats, home baking and cards for the students to hand out. Sadly, we forgot to take photos of the class enjoying their afternoon.

In math, we are finishing learning long division. Students will be taking their Ontario Divider's Licence tests this week to determine whether they have a learner's permit, G1 or G2. Their licence is personalized and looks like a real licence! It will gain them access to special treats.

In addition, in math we are moving on towards fractions and decimals. This also requires memorizing of times tables. Your child should be reviewing them nightly, with either flashcards or the internet sites listed on this blog page. As we move towards reducing fractions or making fractions with common denominators, students who know their times tables tend to find this simple and fast. Those who don't sometimes begin to struggle. We want everyone on board and succeeding! Please let me know via the agenda, if you wish to have extra multiplication drill sheets sent home for weekends. I have already issued a few extra help duotangs to students! They are a big help.

Update for students on vacation

Happy Birthday CT! Hope you celebrated in Vietnam with something special! Your name was on our birthday announcements!

In math: We are finished with multiplication and as the class understood all aspects well and faster than expected, we have moved on to Probability to take a break from all the number sense. In you text, you can now check out pages 357 to 378. We will be completing this short unit next week.
Probability is very fun!

Language: we are continuing to focus on non-fiction report writing and are studying characteristics of non fiction books (index, glossary, diagrams, maps, cutaways, charts). we are beginning to examine proper note taking as we begin to write full reports. Student are researching Titanic to compose a report to focus on their area of interest.

Media Literacy: In class, we are creating White Star Line advertisements to encourage the purchase of tickets for the Titanic (pre-sinking of course!). Students are also creating their own product next week and filming a TV commercial.

Music: We are performing a variety of beats and rhythms as well as learning african ghanian drumming.

Bulletin for CT and PP in Vietnam on vacation:

Hello CT and PP! Hope you are having fun across the world! This week in math we covered multiplying 2 and 3 digit numbers by one digit.
ex: 23 x 4 = or 452 x 6 =

We then went on to learn 2 digit by 2 digit multiplying, as everyone understood the process so well!!
ex: 23 x 42 = and 56 x 22 =

We did most of our work from the Smartboard and through practice sheets, but in the textbook you brought with you on vacation you can review especially pages 149, 157, 159 and 165.

We also worked on word problems involving multiplying. Page 239 and 247 in our text has examples you can try.

In language we did a dive simulation to the wreck of the Titanic and we are reading an article in our textbooks about how Robert Ballard found the shipwreck in 1985. You can check the History links here on this webpage for Titanic info and information on Dr. Robert Ballard. We also wrote reports on Friday about the Titanic.

Make sure to take lots of photos on your vacation so you can show the class when you return. If you keep a diary as suggested, it will help you do a presentation. You could even create a powerpoint show!

Talk soon! Check next week for more updates!
