Algebra Basics: Graphing On The Coordinate Plane - Math Antics

Coordinate Plane and Ordered Pairs Song | 1st Quadrant

New Units

We are beginning a fun geometry unit about Location and Position. Here are the Ontario Curriculum expectations for Grade 5:
MATH:
Location and Movement
– locate an object using the cardinal directions (i.e., north, south, east, west, right, left, center) and a coordinate system (e.g.,“If I walk 5 steps north and 3 steps east, I will arrive at the apple tree.”);
– compare grid systems commonly used on maps (i.e., the use of numbers and letters to identify an area; the use of a coordinate system based on the cardinal directions to describe a specific location);
– identify, perform, and describe translations, using a variety of tools (e.g., geoboard, dot paper, computer program);
– create and analyse designs by translating and/or reflecting a shape, or shapes, using a variety of tools (e.g., geoboard, grid paper, computer program) (Sample problem: Identify translations and/or reflections that map congruent shapes onto each other in a given design.).

LANGUAGE:
In Language Arts, we will be doing a focus on Story Writing (Narrative Fiction) and linking it to math by creating detailed coordinate grid maps of the settings in which our story characters live.
Writing:
-generate ideas about a potential topic and identify those most appropriate for the purpose
-write longer and more complex texts using a variety of forms
- use some vivid and/or figurative language and innovative expressions to add interest
-vary sentence types and structures, with a focus on using conjunctions to connect ideas, and pronouns to make links within and between sentences
-produce revised, draft pieces of writing to meet identified criteria based on the expectations related to content, organization, style, and use of conventions

Strike Tomorrow

There will be no school tomorrow, as the teachers must be picketing outside during the day. Feel free to try the weekly homework, canvas for our exciting DANCE-A-THON, or try Prodigy Math if you wish to do school academics. Mathletics on the Student Portal, as well as Raz Kids, all have activities to keep up student's skills!

DANCE-A-THON information and pledge sheets came home in the agendas today. Please take a peek. This is an excellent fundraiser and proceeds go right back to our school for items such as new tech and sports equipment. And amount helps!

Math Test

There will be a short math test Thursday, issued by our student teacher Ms. Xiong. Students do not need to study for this test, she is not sending a study guide. It will be covering graph creating and analyzing the types of graphs we worked on in class.

Check out this tutorial on the 3 M's!

January Update

Our student teacher Ms. Xiong has been teaching all the math lessons for Data Management since before Christmas as part of her University assignment to prepare for her teaching career. She will be issuing a short graphing test next Wednesday. A small study guide may come home next week, so watch for it in the agenda and on our blog.

Skating has begun for our classes. Please check that you are aware of the dates and times and send the proper equipment if it is your time. So fun!

We will be moving away from graphing in math and begin Measurement for the end of January and part of February.

In language- We are going to focus on Narrative (story) writing, as well as finish up Biography writing to match our Religion Saint projects. Since Christmas, our focus has been on reading using  QAR as our strategy to help us locate answers to comprehension questions and create full answers.

What is QAR? Just a fancy way to categorize the types of questions in the world:

Miss. Sturgeon has been sick with a high fever and tonsillitis since Saturday. She will continue to be away until the fever lifts and antibiotics take affect. :(
