Yes, its true! You are allowed to wear your Pajamas TOMORROW, if you bring in 50 cents (or more) for Shepherds of Good Hope charity.

Don't forget, we have an assembly at 1:15 tomorrow. A few students will read their settings from their stories out loud to the school.

Many students have been asking about Google Earth since we used it in class. I have added a link to download it for free. It is right under the Math/Language/Creativity link list if you scroll down a bit on the right. Have fun! You can now explore oceans, the Titanic wreck, Mars, the Moon...and explore cities in 3D. Pretty impressive! Of course, you can find your house too.

Homework # 5

Homework this week is twofold. There is a text component due on Friday (as usual), and also a Study Guide to review at home until after Thanksgiving. Students will fill in the study guide in class to make sure their answers are correct. Answers are posted on the Smartboard. Students check their work. The Study Guide will come home Monday night with the regular homework.

Students should re-read and quiz themselves on the questions on this Study Guide all week and when possible on the 4 day long weekend. The test is made from the guide. If your child reviews the types of questions, they should be successful on their unit test!

The test is Tuesday October 9th after Thanksgiving allowing for lots of re-reading time.

Watch the timer at the bottom of the game! How fast can YOU get?? Don't forget to click check for your answer!

Homework #1

We begin our homework this week! A textbook will come home assigned to your child, along with a notebook of lined sheets to write the answers in. Please keep it neat: put the title from the textbook page at the top of the notebook page, and include the page number in the corner of the page. Answers should be numbered or lettered to match the textbook.

The textbook covers math fundamentals and basic skills needed for Grade 5. More difficult problem solving tasks are done in class. This means your child should be able to complete a lot of the homework without parental help. This builds confidence and independence with homework skills, which become essential as students move towards high school. If your child seems consistently to find the homework easy and excels at the math concepts, please write a note requesting the Grade 6 text. Several students last year were able to use the reach-ahead text, as their number sense skills were solid enough to try the challenge.

Please see the note regarding homework that is coming home on Monday. It will be glued to the front of each student's homework notebook.

Monday's homework, due by Friday:

Read the first few pages at the start of the text and the Place Value chapter cover page about Cora Hind.
Do pages 4, 5 and 6 (all questions)
Read page 8 and Do page 9 # 9 to 14 and # 17 to 20

First Week Task

Students- Your first job this week is vote for your favourite subjects, here in the poll on the right. --------->

Welcome Back!

Hello to all my new students out there! This website will have information for you and your parents, as well as fun game sites for all areas of interest. It is a good idea to practice your times tables every night using the game links on here, especially if you are finished your regular homework.

-----Miss Sturgeon

Parents- Homework will be in an older math textbook that you can keep at home all year. It is a book that focuses on basic concepts and skills, as well as math vocabulary. They are math activities that students should be able to complete relatively well on their own, with less of the more complex problem solving that is taught in the classroom. This ensures foundational concept review as well as builds confidence in homework skills. On Mondays in the agenda, students will copy the page number and questions they are to complete for the week. They complete the work in their homework notebook and return it by Friday. This allows for budgeting of time if students have extra activities and commitments at home. Very rarely will there suddenly be more work on another day of the week, unless a student has lots of catch-up from the day due to a flare up of the sillies or mis-behaviour.

This year we have a lot of movement: There are Grade 5s with Miss Sturgeon in the morning, and a mix of Grade 4 and 5 in the afternoon. Some of the original Grade 5s stay with Miss Sturgeon, while others move next door to the Grade 6 class with Mrs. Fleury to create a 5/6 in the afternoon. Desks will not be used to store any personal items. Everything needs to move with your child. Items and belongings should be kept at a minimum. A pencil case is really all they need, filled with pencils, erasers and a pair of scissors.

Last Notes..

As the school year winds down, a few notes.
1. Please keep sending your child to school. We are finishing up a Poetry Book Project that is work AND a keepsake for the year. It will be completed and brought home Wednesday with report cards. We are not 'doing nothing' next week. Students will also be finishing graphing activities in math. We make every day count!
2. Send in extra grocery bags when possible. Students will be bringing home extra articles of clothing that have been accumulating, as well as extra shoes, notebooks and duotangs.
3. Return the class Math homework text by tomorrow (Friday). Otherwise I WILL be coming to your door this weekend/and early next week to pick it up.
4. Students will be presented their Ontario Dividers Licence next week. They will need it for the last day of school to get into our last block party. Don't leave it at home!

Divider's Licence

The students wrote their Ontario Dividers Licence exams today. They will come home in the yellow duotang for tests and quizzes on Wednesday. Make corrections and restudy to write the test again if you did not earn your licence this time! Students: You need it by next week to get into the end of the year party. Practice, practice!

Cool Free Download

Check out Helium Frog easy free download! Install, hook up a webcam and have fun making claymation, real animation moving objects or people in a silly way, or using paper to make traditional animations! I love it!

EXTRA NOTE: I downloaded the 2.06 version offered on the MediaFire site (the first link). It works perfectly!

Homework: April 16- 20

The last two weeks have been short weeks, and math worksheets were sent home instead of the usually textbook work. The 13 students who did not hand in their homework the last 2 weeks were kept in at recess or completed work at computer and gym times. This will continue for the rest of Term 3, as students are working on the learning skill of Self-Regulation and homework responsibility is a valuable skill.

On the weekend, students were told to study their 7 times tables for a check-up quiz Monday. The results of the quiz will be sent home this week, along with other small quizzes we have had the last month. Please take a peek and return.

This week, the textbook will be used again, for our Measurement unit.

The assignment for Grade 5 is : page 240 (all), page 241 #6-17 and page 242 (all).

The assignment for Grade 4 is : page 176 (all) and page 177 (all). Page 180 (all) and 181 (all).

News

Now that the busy weeks of Report Card writing are complete, there is time to get this blog updated!

Our last class skating trip is this Tuesday, Feb. 7th. The students have been doing a very good job working on their skating moves and have exhibited good behaviour at the rink. Any volunteers that can make it out to our last skate, please come! It is from 2pm until 3pm.
Report cards will be coming home next week, February 10th. Please try to comment on the last page with your child. It makes a difference when students can review their own progress with their parents and comment on their next steps.

Our Grade 5 students have had fun with real pig organ dissections in science, as pig organs most closely resemble human ones. We looked at the heart, stomach, intestines and kidneys! The students found this fascinating... much more interesting than the plastic replicas and posters.

In language we are creating Greek Myths; full stories with settings, characters, plots and morals. The students will be tired of writing at the end of some days!

In math, we are moving away from Probability and Problem solving and gearing up for Geometry. Get ready for shapes and angles!

In Music, we are listening to Classical pieces, and orchestral scores as well as African drumming and singing. Students will also be using their voices to perform Multiplication Rap songs.

Homework may continue to have a extra worksheet here and there (it is always noted in the agenda if there is one) along with the regular basics of math textbook pages. This is to keep following with the classroom lessons, as the textbook is more focused on basics students should master.

The Groundhog predicted an early Spring...let's look forward to sunny spring days ahead!

Homework

Miss. Sturgeon is finally feeling better, her fever is gone and she will be back at work tomorrow. The homework worksheet that should have come home can be handed in on Monday, since the snow day also got in the way and students had one less night to work on it.

Grade 5 students will have a science test coming up, so keep your eyes open in the agenda for news of a study guide!
